Property Manager, What to do to Prepare for a Violent Storm

Preparing Your Properties and Yourself for Violent Storms.

Here are some tips if you have property or live on Cape Cod or the South Shore:

·       Don’t wait to stock up on supplies. Make sure you have the following: Nonperishable food (bread, peanut butter, jelly, canned foods, crackers), cooler with ice for perishables, water, flashlight and batteries, wood for the fireplace, cash, medicine, first aid, blankets, clothes, cell phone, gas, matches or a lighter and candles.

·       Other supplies. Fill 3 or 4 five-gallon buckets- or bathtub – with water to flush toilets. Fill cooking pots with water for cooking, face washing, brushing teeth. A grill outside is handy too after the storm if there is no power.

·       Have an emergency and evacuation plan. Know the evacuation plan outlined by your town and county. Check your town website and get signed up for alert text messages. Keep a list of emergency phone numbers.

·       Do you have pets? Don’t tie them up or leave these friends behind. If you evacuate remember to pack their food and leashes.

·       Insurance. Make sure the property has the correct coverage. Talk to your agent and make sure you are covered for the appropriate storm hazards.

·       Papers. Use a watertight container to store copies of important documents (birth cert, SS card, passport, banking info, wills).

·       Your Property. Check your roof and reinforce what you can. Trim trees back from the house and remove dead tree limbs. Look for stuff that will blow around and secure it – such as patio chairs, umbrellas and outdoor tables. Consider covering the windows with plywood, shutters or duct tape shaped in an X. Do your doors latch properly?
